Portknockie
Founded in 1677, the oldest part of Portknockie is made up of traditional stone cottages, each one single-storey and arranged in neat rows running north to south to shield them from the fierce winter gales. These cottages originally had thatched roofs and earthen floors. The narrow passageways between them are known locally as “slappies.”
By the 19th century the village saw growth from the herring fishing boom and larger homes began to pop up, many with dormer windows and lofts for storing fishing nets. Some even have stone steps leading up to those lofts, giving them a unique character.
