Portknockie Pledge

We are new comers to the village, only lived here 35 years! and we have always been interested in the history of our house (built in 1866) and the village.

We found this card behind a fire place surround we were moving;

Presented to Mary Pirie on the 12th July 1886 from the Portknockie F C Sabbath School, Mary promising to “abstain from all intoxicating liquors and beverages”

We at first thought this must be an “adult” making the Pledge but it appears this was aimed at school children. Getting them early I suppose?

We have this framed to keep it in good condition, it is still colourful so it must have been very bright in 1886.
